A study by the University of Arkansas shows that daycare workers are not washing their hands properly. The researchers used video cameras to monitor hand-washing at an early childhood center. Only about 22% of adults followed proper hand-washing procedures after emptying garbage cans, before preparing food, and after wiping noses. Considering children have partially developed immune systems, hand-washing can reduce their risk of diarrhea by 30% and respiratory infections by 20%. Proper hand-washing involves thoroughly scrubbing all parts of the hand, including under the nails, for 15 to 20 seconds.
