A recent flash flood in Arizona killed nine people in a river canyon. By the time a surge of water reached a rocky swimming hole several miles downstream, it was a roaring torrent 6 feet high. The family celebrating a birthday had no chance to escape. The bodies were found up to 2 miles away. Five other people were rescued. Among the victims were three generations of a family, five of them children. All had been relaxing Saturday in the swimming hole, where rocks create pools and small waterfalls. The river narrowed in their location, squeezing the flow of water and increasing its deadly force.
