Seattle police are investigating a Sunday incident in which officers fatally shot Charleena Lyles, a woman who had called in to report a burglary. Two officers went to the apartment — where several children were present — where Lyles allegedly confronted them with a knife, which prompted both officers to discharge their weapons. According to a Police spokesperson, “the officers immediately performed first aid,” but fire medics soon determined that the woman had died of her wounds. Police on Monday released a 4-minute piece of audio of the officers discussing a previous encounter with the woman, with whom they late calmly discuss the details of the reported theft – before the situation escalates, and officers can be heard yelling “Get back! Get back!” and “We need help,” followed by an eruption of gunfire. And on Monday family members say that Lyles – who had struggled with mental health issues – was pregnant. The incident is currently under further investigation.
