A high-stakes runoff in the state of Georgia is set to test Donald Trump’s influence and the limits of the backlash against him. Tuesday night, Democrat Jon Ossoff, a 30-year-old former congressional aide, came within two points of an outright victory over 17 other candidates in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District. Republican Karen Handel, a former Georgia secretary of state, came in a distant second, qualifying her for the runoff with Ossoff in June. Still, the close finish in Georgia as well as a previous special election in Kansas has underscored Democrats’ potential to capitalize on surging liberal energy following Trump’s election win.
