Temperatures in Death Valley in eastern California are expected to reach 127 degrees Fahrenheit this week.
The extreme heat was brought on by a high-pressure system camped over the Four Corners region.
It’s already boosted temperatures above normal across much of the Southwest. The worst is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday.
The heat wave is likely to tax power grids. Reuters reports airlines have warned that flights could be disrupted.
