Jurassic Park-Like Enzyme Forms Carbon-Silicon Bonds

After three generations of selective breeding, scientists have created an enzyme that can bring two unlikely atoms together: carbon and silicon. The enzyme comes from a hot spring-dwelling bacteria called Rhodothermus marinus, which means that unlike most other enzymes, boiling this one won’t denature the protein. Study author Frances Arnold said, “What excites me is the demonstration of how rapidly biological systems can innovate. You can boil this puppy. It’s super stable because it comes from an organism that lives in these hot springs.” Carbon-silicon bonds are currently found in paints and medical implants, but this solution could be a lot cheaper.
