Mice Give Birth With 3D-Printed Ovaries

Researchers at Northwestern University are dedicated to restoring fertility and hormone production in female cancer survivors. And they’re using a 3D printer to do it. Members of the Feinberg School of Medicine and McCormick School of Engineering are working together to build bioprosthetic ovaries. In early testing, scientists removed a female mouse’s ovary and replaced it with a 3D-printed version, allowing the rodent to ovulate and give birth to healthy pups. Ideally, these 3D-printed structures will help avoid the pain and agony of infertility by naturally boosting hormone production and restoring fertility in sterilized users.
