Philippine Forces Launch Offensive In Marawi In Hopes To End Conflict

On Tuesday, Philippine aircraft and troops launched a renewed push against Islamist militants in Malawi, and a military spokesman said the goal was to clear the area by the weekend Eid festival. The offensive came amid concerns that rebel reinforcements could arrive in the city following Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. According to an official count, nearly 350 people have been killed since the fighting in Malawi began 5 weeks ago. Residents fleeing the war-torn area have claimed to have seen scores of bodies amid the debris of homes destroyed in bombing and cross-fire. Military spokesman Brigadier-General Restituto Padilla said, “We are not setting any deadlines knowing the complexity of the battle. We are doing our best to expedite the liberation of Marawi at the soonest time possible.”
