On Thursday, The Russian Supreme Court decided the country’s branch of Jehovah’s Witnesses is “extremist,” likening it to the Islamic State. The group is to be disbanded and its assets seized by the government. Jehovah’s Witnesses has about 170,000 followers in Russia. The group will appeal the decision. They have a month to do so. Under Russian law, the ban would not prohibit individual believers from following their faith. However, congregating and preaching would become offenses punishable with upwards of five years in prison.
