At the University of Florida, a team of scientists have created a new way of printing 3D objects which could open the door for printing complex organic structures. While there are currently methods for printing organs, scientists have been met with the challenge of soft materials being unable to maintain their structure during the printing process. However, the team led by Christopher S. O’Bryan, has vaulted this hurdle by printing directly into soft solid structures made of micro-organogels that can hold soft structures in place during printing. Currently, the team is only printing silicone structures using this method, but medical implants are imperative for the team and one of their trial objects was a human tracheal implant. The team hopes this new technology could lead to life-saving advances in the development of actual 3D printed organs.
