By encoding each bit into the magnetic field, the team has managed to develop the most compact data storage device ever.
The team used atoms of holmium deposited on a surface of magnesium oxide to store the bits.
By directing each atom’s magnetic field using a scanning tunneling microscope, the team could flip the magnetic field, and read the data by measuring the current running through the field.
