Study Released on U.S. Sunburn Treatment

According to a new study, people with sunburn-related conditions led to over 33,000 visits to US emergency departments in 2013. This in turn lead to at least $11.2 million in medical costs. Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at New York City’s Mount Sinai Hospital says that the study shows alcohol can negatively affect putting on sunscreen the right way. In a statement, Zeichner said, “Alcohol was shown to be a predisposing factor a sunburn bad enough that it required a visit to the emergency room.” He then added, “Even without a drink, most people do not apply as much sunscreen as they should and do not reapply. This is much less likely to occur in the setting of drinking when outdoors.”
