Study Suggests Acupuncture May Be Effective Against Pain In ER

According to a new study, acupuncture offer some emergency patients a safe and effective alternative to pain medications. Study lead investigator Marc Cohen said, “While acupuncture is widely used by practitioners in community settings for treating pain, it is rarely used in hospital emergency departments.” Cohen went on to say that concerns over the use of opioids, which carry the risk of addiction, increased the need for a variety of pain-relieving options for emergency doctors and nurses. According to Cohen, the study results also suggest that acupuncture would be especially beneficial for patients who can’t use standard pain-relieving drugs due to other medical conditions.
