US Student Released From Captivity in North Korea Passes Away

According to a statement from his family Monday, Otto Warmbier, the US student who was in a coma after being released from captivity in North Korea, has passed away. According to the North Korean government, Warmbier, a former student at the University of Virginia who was held for 17-months, fell into a coma after contracting botulism and ingesting a sleeping pill. Warmbier was detained back in January 2016 after being accused of a “hostile act” while on a group tour in North Korea. After a short trial soon afterwards, he was then sentenced to 15 years of prison and hard labor.
